In Roman times they were made with tallow (fat from cows or sheep), in ancient China with whale fat and in Tibet with yak (bovine) butter.
In medieval Europe, waste fats from the kitchen were used until reaching the French master candle makers of the 13th century. and the use of beeswax, much more fragrant but certainly more expensive.
